Wildlife-friendly Meat

BEEF:- Our cattle are 100% grass-fed rare-breed Shetland cattle. They are raised in a family unit and are naturally weened. They graze to improve biodiversity (which is happening!) & are looked after to extremely high welfare standards (think massaging and scratching!). We have not needed to use medicines or chemicals and the farm has been managed organically for the last 5 years, & is in official organic conversion (2024).

Our small herd includes the Shetland cattle, ponies (Shetland and Gypsy cob) and on occasion pigs. It’s very satisfying to see swallows, house martins and sand martins weaving amongst them to catch the flies they attract, or watch dung beetles mining their dung, followed by badgers snaffling the beetles! Wild animals and wild flowers are all increasing as a result of these native wildlife-attractors.

We have also planted 1/3 of the farm in woodland, created orchards, ponds and a sand martin cliff, are restoring hay meadows and are enabling natural regeneration through the perimeter deer fence we constructed. Grazing is restricted and so as the herd grows so we either move animals on or select cattle and pigs for meat.
